AYRSHIRE YEOMAN'S DEATH

At Cupar on Saturday ANDREW SERVICE, a young trooper in the Ayrshire Yeomanry was exercising a horse which had been impressed for service when the animal bolted. It careered through North Union Street with Service in the saddle endeavouring to pull it up. In trying to negotiate the turn into West Port at full speed the horse slipped and came down, throwing Service over its head. The rider's skull was fractured, and Doctor Robertson, of Prestwick, the regimental surgeon, who was hurriedly called, pronounced life extinct.

Service, who was 32 years of age, hailed from Saltcoats. He was the youngest son of Mr William Service, chairman of Saltcoats parish Council and session clerk to the Parish Church. Some years ago he became a member of the yeomanry, and when mobilisation took place he was sent to Cupar. In Saltcoats he was very well known and highly respected for his fine qualities.

The body was taken to Saltcoats on Saturday night for interment.

FLOWER SHOW AT SALTCOATS

This yearly competition of the Saltcoats, Ardrossan, and Stevenston Society took place in the Town Hall.

Without entering very minutely into special articles brought forward for exhibition and competition, we may state that almost every section of the prize list was represented by numerous and fine specimens. This was particularly noticeable in the gladioli and hollyhock blooms, in which departments there was a very magnificent display. Dahlias were only represented in small quantity, although the few shown were fine blooms.

As has also been observable at almost all the shows this year, the specimens of fruit were small.

In the ornithological department there was a good display of the little warblers, several of the first-prize takers being acknowledged by competent judges to be splendid specimens.
