MUNICIPAL MEETING – SALTCOATS

This body met on Monday evening – Provost McIsaac presiding.

The Burgh rate was fixed at 6d per £1, and the water rate at 1s 4d per £1.

Mr Taylor moved, and Mr J. Miller seconded, a motion that a sewer rate of 1d per £1 be imposed on proprietors

Mr Service, seconded by Bailie Campbell, moved an amendment that no such assessment be imposed.

The assessment was carried

A correspondence between the convener of the Works Committee and Mr Cuninghame of Auchenharvie as to pavements opposite the latter’s property was read.

The Works Committee was empowered to advertise for offers for laying the pavement in front of each of Mr Cuninghame’s properties, to accept the most suitable and get the work executed, to apply to Mr Cuninghame for payment, and to report at next meeting.

It was agreed to ask the Road Trustees to re-causeway Countess Street, level the street, and lay sivers.

The Works Committee was instructed to advertise for offers for laying pavements before the property of each proprietor who has already been notified to lay pavements but has not done so, accept the most suitable in each case, and see the work done immediately.

MUNICIPAL MEETING – SALTCOATS

Bailie Miller in the chair.

Mr Fleck proposed that the Works Committee draw up bye-laws before the bucket system is introduced into the burgh.

Captain Torrance said the bye-laws might be fixed that night, because the Works Committee had the whole thing cut and dry all along. Mr Caldwell, Mr Fleck, and Bailie Hunter protested strongly against this remark.

After a hot discussion the motion was adopted.

The question of the delay in carrying out the work of illuminating the town clock led to another lively discussion. The meeting decided to have a cement moulding round the clock.

It was reported that Mr Stevenson wished a reply as to whether the Commissioners would take the Holm Plantation for a public park. Mr Fleck moved that Mr Stevenston be asked to continue the matter till December so as to allow the question to be ventilated at next election at Ardrossan. What more could they do?

Captain Torrance – You could make a public park to suit Ardrossan to be paid for by Saltcoats.

Bailie Hunter – If we were fools we could make a public park for Ayrshire, but we don’t happen to be that.

Captain Torrance said he would be quite willing to join with Ardrossan for a jubilee park, and he was surprised that Ardrossan did not agree to carry out the scheme.

It was decided to ask Mr Stevenson to delay the matter.

THE THUNDERSTORM - FLOODING AND DAMAGE TO PROPERY - SALTCOATS

Commencing about eight o'clock in the morning, the storm continued with brief intervals up till four o'clock in the afternoon. So long-continued a thunderstorm has not been experienced here for many years. The thunder was very loud, with vivid flashes of lightning, and about one o'clock there was a heavy downpour of rain, which flooded a large close in Green Street.

At the Bowling Green the lightning struck the flag-pole near the bowl-house, smashing it and scattering the wood in all directions, some of the pieces being found 180 yards off.
