SALTCOATS – THE NEW HALL

The committee appointed to adjudicate on the plans for the proposed New Hall, have selected the plan of Mr Thomas Glen, Saltcoats, as that which came nearest to the instructions given to the architects.

The hall trustees have confirmed that decision.

ATTEMPTED BURGLARY

On Tuesday night an attempt was made to break into the shed of Mrs Orr, grocer, Hamilton Street, Saltcoats.

A pane of glass in the back window was broken and removed, and then an attempt was made to force the inside shutter. This attempt failed, as the shutter is lined with lead and secured with an iron crossbar.

SALTCOATS LITERARY SOCIETY

The monthly “At home” was held on Tuesday evening, and took the form of a Burns Lecture and concert. The lecture hall was filled to overflowing, many of the audience having to be content with standing room.

Provost McIsaac occupied the chair.

Dr. Milroy, of Kilwinning, delivered an eloquent lecture on “The Poetry of Burns,” and paid high tribute to the genius of our national bard, illustrating the lecture with many extracts from the writings of the poet.

Before and after the lecture a concert of Burns’s songs was given in the form of solos, duets, and part songs.

The vocalists were Miss McAusland, Ardrossan; Mrs H. B. Fullerton, Saltcoats; Miss Grierson, Glasgow; and the choir of St. Andrew’s Church, Ardrossan, with Mr H. B. Fullerton as conductor and accompanist.

The lecture was listened to throughout with the closest attention, and was much appreciated.

The concert also was much appreciated, especially the songs by Miss McAusland and Miss Grierson, who is a pupil of Miss McAusland’s.

The customary votes of thanks brought a very successful and enthusiastic meeting to a close.

Life Saving Presentations
Three local men, Messrs. George Kelly, Harry Docherty and David Bell received Royal Humane Society Parchments for their efforts to save a small boy, William Watt, from drowning at the harbour on 11th October. Police Inspector George Simpson said that Kelly dived into the water and rescued the boy. The other two men, who are both retired, applied artificial respiration for 20 minutes before the boy recovered. Kelly received the Society's Life Saving Certificate and the other two each were presented with a Resuscitation Certificate.

An average attendance at Market on Thursday.

There were 141 bolls wheat and 10 bolls of oats exposed. Of 56 bolls of oatmeal exposed, 40 sold at 20s 6d, and 16 at 20s; average 20s 3d. There were 7 bolls of beans exposed.
