Died on service, Private Alexander McKenzie, 2nd Battalion King’s Own Scottish Borderers – Theatre of war, France and Flanders – enlisted at Ardrossan; resident of Saltcoats.

Play was resumed yesterday. The weather was very fine in the morning though a little cloudy, but rain fell after one o’clock heavily, and the green was in good condition.

THE GLASGOW HOLIDAYS

Saltcoats:

The numbers who visited the town appeared to be as great as in former years, and it was impossible to find accommodation for all. The weather was rather unfavourable, rain falling for some hours. In the evening the weather cleared, and the thoroughfares were crowded with holiday-makers, who were very orderly.

On Sunday anniversary services were held in this church when the Rev. R. White, D.D., Edinburgh, preached to large congregations in the forenoon and evening. The Rev. G. Fairgrieve officiated in the afternoon.

The collections amounted to £34.

This tournament was resumed yesterday under favourable weather auspices. All of the games were extremely well contested and the playing was decidedly superior to anything which has yet been witnessed during the course of the tournament.

Third and fourth ties were played.

SALTCOATS WEST U.P. CHURCH

Anniversary services were observed on Sabbath last.

The Rev. Peter McDowall, of Alloa, preached in the forenoon and evening, and the Rev. George Fairgrieve, the pastor of the congregation, in the afternoon.

The collection for the day amounted to the sum of £53. This sum will enable the managers to pay off almost the whole of the debt resting on the church.

SALTCOATS BOWLING TOURNAMENT

This tournament was resumed on Saturday morning under very unfortunate weather auspices. The attendance of visitors in consequence was very meagre, and those who did attend had a very unfortunate time of it. Though the rain had the effect of making the green somewhat heavy and preventing fine play, there were some beautiful games played.

Some remaining fourth ties, and all fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth ties were completed.

H. M. Kirkwood (£25), Stirling – 21; J. Brown (£15), Sanquhar – 18 points.

SALTCOATS - FUNERAL OF REV. D.E. McNAB

On Saturday afternoon the remains of Rev. D. E. McNab were interred in Ardrossan Cemetery.

An impressive service was held in the Parish Church, which was largely attended by members of the congregation and residents in the town.

Rev. J. D. McCall, Ardrossan, read a portion of the scriptures, and Rev. Mr Robertson, of London, engaged in prayer.

The coffin, which was covered with beautiful wreaths of flowers, was placed in front of the pulpit, and the church was draped in black.

A large number of persons followed the hearse to the Cemetery, the Presbytery being largely represented, and local ministers being also in attendance.

Most of the shops were closed, and the church bells tolled.

The funeral was witnessed by a large number of spectators.
