The births during the quarter were 31, and the deaths were 35.

A motion by the Provost for the introduction of water-closets in dwelling-houses was carried by a majority.

DETAILS OF THE STORM

Saltcoats:
At eight o’clock on Tuesday night the sea was breaking over the quay wall and flooded the houses in Quay Street. At the same time the water entered the rear of some shops in Dockhead Street and flooded them. A boat was swamped in the harbour. The new quay was greatly damaged. Houses in Windmill Street were flooded.

While a special meeting was being held in the West U.P. Church some panes of glass in the large window over the entrance were blown in.

Slates and chimney cans were blown from houses in the town.

LOSS OF A GIRVAN SMACK AND TWO OF THE CREW

The fishing smack FANNY, of Girvan, which had been at the herring fishing at Skipness, while making for Saltcoats with a quantity of herring at about 8 a.m. yesterday, encountered a severe squall off Arran, a mile or so north of Sannox, and foundered.

The three men who composed the crew and who were thrown into the water, are named – William Dummigan, son of the owner of the smack, John Kennedy, and Daniel McLean. The two last named were drowned.

A smack named RAPID, belonging to JOHN SHEDDEN, Saltcoats, was at anchor engaged in lobster fishing a mile nearer the shore. The crew witnessed the accident. Proceeding as fast as possible to the rescue of the unfortunate crew, they found William Dummigan clinging to a barrel and they got him on board the smack.

Another man named Kennedy was afterwards seen floating in the water, but when taken out he was dead.

They remained for some time looking for the body of David McLean, but without success.

The smack RAPID then made for Saltcoats with the rescued man and the body of McLean.

It is said that McLean was married and leaves a widow and large family, and that Kennedy leaves a widow but no family.

Much credit is due to John Shedden, and the crew of the RAPID who gallantly attempted to rescue the unfortunate men.

ASSAULT

At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court yesterday WILLIAM CULLEN, plasterer, Main Street, Saltcoats, pleaded guilty to having, on the 8th October, along with two others, committed a brutal assault on a man named Hugh Reid and his wife in Courthill Street, Dalry.

He was fined, as the others had been at a previous diet, in £3, or thirty days’ imprisonment.

In the second half, however, the visitors fell away considerably, while the home team succeeded in raising their score by 5 points.
