BOATING FATALITY

At eight o’clock last night Irvine Harbour was the scene of an accident which resulted in the drowning of a man named JOHN PLLU, bogey-runner in the employment of Nobel’s Explosives Company.

In the earlier part of the evening, along with three companions, he sailed from Saltcoats to Irvine in a small boat with a lugsail for the purpose of gathering mussels for fishing bait.

On leaving the harbour Pllu, who was the only one of the crew who understood the management of a sail boat, hoisted the lugsail, leaving the tiller unattended. A fresh breeze from the shore catching the boat in this position, threw it on its beam ends, precipitating the four men into the water. Only two were able to swim, and with some difficulty succeeded in reaching the harbour. The third man clung to the overturned boat till rescued, but the unfortunate Pllu was drowned. His body was found shortly afterwards between the pilot-house opposite which the accident took place.

MUNICIPAL MEETING – SALTCOATS

Provost Blakely presided.

A letter was read from Mr Whyte, who was elected a member of the Town Council last month, declining to accept office. On the motion of Mr Bogle, Mr Alexander S. Miller was elected to fill the vacancy.

A petition was read from the residenters in Montgomerie Crescent protesting against minstrels being on the West Shore opposite the Crescent. The Council considered the petition, but as the minstrels are not to be allowed there the petition did not apply.

An offer was accepted from Messrs Lee and Arden of £20 for permission to give minstrel entertainment during the summer months at the West Shore near the kiosk, and, when the band is performing in Melbourne Park, the minstrels will go to the East Shore.

A petition was also presented, signed by nearly 200 people, in favour of stalls being put on the shore. The Council confirmed their previous decision, a motion by Mr Bogle to suspend the standing orders being defeated. Mr Bogle then gave notice that at the next meeting he would move the stalls be permitted.
