A Birch Mocha moth caught at Ardeer Quarry Local Nature Reserve a few days ago. As its name suggests, the caterpillars of this moth feed on Birch leaves. Despite its host trees, Silver Birch and Downy Birch, being common, it’s a rare moth in southern Scotland – it had not previously been found in Ayrshire.

There was a great display of Bogbean at Ashgrove Loch a few weeks. There were thousands of flowerheads. As its name suggests, it’s a wetland plant – and one that’s quite uncommon locally.

To be honest, I thought this, at first glance, was part of a paper doilly left in a pie dish!

Here's a couple of wild orange lily's out the back door, well, they're not really wild, but they're not very pleased, being stuck in a pot

A Dune Wolf-spider on the Ardeer Peninsula a week or two ago. This is a rare spider of sand dunes, which has only been found at one other site in Ayrshire – it was found in Prestwick Dunes a few decades ago. Like other wolf spiders, it doesn’t catch its prey in a web, it hunts them down on foot, scuttling across the ground.

Oh! that looks a good size. Not fond of spiders at the best of times.

Two Green Silver-lines moths caught at Ardeer Quarry Local Nature Reserve a few weeks ago. Like many moth species, it's name is pretty descriptive - it is green with 'silver' lines! I tend to find this species in areas of Birch woodland - locally, the caterpillar’s main food is Birch leaves.

A Sea Slater found under a rock on the Ardeer Peninsula’s saltmarsh. These are the biggest slaters in Britain – they can grow to over an inch in length. A lot of people think slaters are insects. They are actually crustaceans – i.e. they’re more closely related to lobsters and crabs than to insects. Unlike the more commonly encountered slaters, which are pretty slothful, Sea Slaters are fast runners and scuttle away at quite a speed when disturbed. They also change colour depending on the time of day: they are dark grey during the day when they hide in dark places, but turn pale (for camouflage), as in the photo, when it gets dark and they emerge to feed on the shore.

Better late than never as they say.
Snapped this photo of a wild 'Dog Rose' flower (Rosa Canina) close to Stevenston Point in early Aug. 2013. I believe the name came about because in the past it was thought it's root held the cure for a bite from a Rabid Dog, but nowadays it's known simply as being a good source of Rose-Hip syrup .. and Itchycoos!
