Craigie College of Education diplomas : 1968, 1972-74

Post by down south » Wed Sep 23, 2020 3:35 pm

This is not strictly schools, but education; but in any case it's relevant to schools because those listed will have gone on to teach in Ayrshire primary schools, and in particular some of them in Three Towns schools. I've included diploma students from other towns for that reason; for example, included in this list are the two students who taught us for the first month of Primary 7, and neither of them came from Ardrossan, Saltcoats or Stevenston.

That said, here is the diploma list for Craigie College of Education for 1968. I've highlighted the students from the Three Towns in bold; and also those from Largs and West Kilbride who may have been at Ardrossan Academy.

Sorry everyone, I should have made it plain that it was a teacher training college; situated in Ayr I believe. I was guilty of rather assuming that it was still going and everyone had heard of it.

Here we go...

Craigie College of Education was opened in 1964 to train primary school teachers, mainly for the south west of Scotland. It was established in response to increasing primary school rolls and a shortage of primary school teachers.
The College developed close links with the University of Strathclyde, with the College's degrees and certificates being validated and awarded by the University. In 1993, the College merged with the University of Paisley.

It’s now the University of the West of Scotland with a campus in Paisley, Dumfries, Hamilton and Ayr - the old building in Ayr was demolished when the new buildings were opened 7 or 8 years ago. It also runs nursing degrees in connection with Crosshouse Hospital, and TV and theatre production degrees - there was always a strange mix of students in the refectory

Thanks for all that information, folks !

We now come to the list for 1972. There are more people from the Three Towns in this one, and once again they're highlighted. The list also seems to be not as comprehensive, with no students from Ayr or Kilmarnock included, for example. Another thing to note : there are some male students, which there weren't last time !

As a bonus there's a picture of some of the graduates:

Here now is the list for 1973. Once again the list is limited but it's a little mystifying to see Prestwick apparently included in North Ayrshire !

Here finally is the list for 1974. The Herald certainly didn't limit its list this time; it included everyone, even from as far afield as Edinburgh, the Isle of Skye, and Yorkshire ! So I've taken the decision to only include those from North Ayrshire.

CRAIGIE DIPLOMA WINNERS

A warning that if there was not an increase in teachers' salaries Craigie College of Education would not get the people it needed was given by the principal, Miss E M Rennie, at the diploma ceremony on Monday.

Miss Rennie told the newly qualified teachers that they were the lowest paid but no doubt a "man from the ministry " could prove on paper statistically that far from being the lowest paid they were somewhere in the middle.

Chairman of governors, Mr J T Cree was also critical of teachers' salaries. He spoke of unrest in the profession and warned that if the new review body did not come up with something in the autumn he could see militant action resulting.

Diplomas with distinction : Evelyn J Bennett ( Irvine ), Christine W Kettyle ( Saltcoats) .

With merit in professional and academic subjects : Mary G Jack ( Fairlie ) , Sarah Thomson ( Kilwinning ).

With merit in teaching and academic subjects : Sandra V Palmer ( Stevenston ) , Anne Thomson ( Saltcoats ) .

With merit in academic subjects : Sheila I P Brown ( West Kilbride ) , Christine M Ewing ( Ardrossan ) , Elizabeth R Finnie ( Kilwinning ), Jean Anne Watson ( Irvine ), Elizabeth L Yarr ( Stevenston ) .

With merit in professional subjects : Jacqueline Alcock ( Kilwinning ), Doris P Caldwell ( Irvine ), Edward V Garland ( Saltcoats ) , Theresa Hunter ( Stevenston ) , Rosemary R A Wilson ( Kilbirnie ).

With merit in teaching : Elizabeth Ann Kidd ( Largs ) .

Diploma pass : Stewart F Black ( Saltcoats ) , Sarah B Byron ( Irvine ), Annie F Dickson ( Stevenston ) , Maureen E Fynes ( Beith ), Jean M Gaw ( Irvine ), Barbara M Grama ( Irvine ), Margaret I Gray ( Irvine ), Mary K Hamilton ( Kilwinning ), Maureen M Hamilton ( Saltcoats ), Mary M McCallum ( Kilwinning ), Ellen J McNaught ( Largs ) , Margaret C O'Brien ( Stevenston ) , Lily Ann H Oliphant ( Saltcoats ) , Elizabeth C M Sim ( Irvine ), Janet M H Sinclair ( Fairlie ) , Anne J Slater ( Stevenston ) , Margaret L Thomson ( Dalry ).

College Associateship : Pass, Susan Garland ( Saltcoats ) .
