St Andrew's Academy school sports results 1972

Post by down south »

As already mentioned here , St Andrew's Academy held their first school sports day on the 17th of June 1972. The event was described as follows :

A gala and sports day was held by the Parent-Teacher Association of St Andrew's Academy, Saltcoats, to celebrate the completion of the first academic year of the new school. The event was held in the school grounds and, despite the cold and blustery weather, there was a good turnout of pupils and families to watch and take part in the very numerous sporting events. The event raised £590.

Mr Finn, rector, introduced Provost Barnett and Mrs Barnett who opened the proceedings. Provost Barnett congratulated the association on their efforts. He was very pleased that the Catholic communities of Saltcoats, Ardrossan and Stevenston had now their own comprehensive school and he had every expectation that , with the completion of the extensions due to begin in the autumn, there would be an academy with facilities as good as any in the county.

And here are the principal winners in the sporting events :

And here are those champions pictured with their trophies; including of course the future famous footballer Roy Aitken. J Connell should from the detail of the results be J Conwell, but confusingly he should be M Gallagher; obviously some mistake here.

PS Some further thoughts on the Michael Gallagher / Joseph Conwell conundrum. We have another picture featuring Michael Gallagher, when he was junior sports champion at his previous school, St Peter's; it's this one, though the caption has him wrongly as Alex Gallacher :

and I think you would agree that the one here is not the same boy. So he must indeed be Joseph Conwell. Now it's noticeable that whereas the others have trophies, he is holding a shield. And in the St Andrew's prizelist for 1972 ( see here ) the implication is that the captain of the winning house in the sports is Joseph Conwell. So perhaps the shield was the prize for the winning house, Morville, and that would explain why he was pictured; though of course the Herald's caption has it all wrong.

I love the irony of these results...………..Roy Aitken won the sprints and 400 metres yet was unplaced in the football dribble. Yet the great man had a stellar football career for both Celtic and Scotland. :o :o
