Ardrossan Academy Teachers

Post by scottyd »

A random conversation led me to remember some teachers at the Academy who, based on modern standards, would have been prosecuted for child abuse today.

Lexi Dunlop for slapping me violently on the back of the head.
Tommy Hughes for smacking boys on the bottom with a gym shoe.
Mrs Seaman for giving us "the belt" for homework mistakes. I got three one day and I remember another boy getting six.
Miss Christie for verbal abuse - she terrified me.
One whose name escapes me for throwing blackboard cleaners (like wee bricks) across the classroom at boys who annoyed him.

Any others ???

I remember retelling some similar 3T experiences to a Home Counties school inspector and was met with sympathy, and the observation "but it was Scotland we're talking about, after all".

I'd rather get 2 of the belt than suspended or expelled. It was rough justice but 9 times out of 10 we probably deserved it :D
Those wimin were in the nip.

The teacher that I remember throwing chalk and the blackboard duster was a Mr. Coleman the French teacher.

Tommy Hughes for smacking boys on the bottom with a gym shoe.
Hughes was discussed a couple of years ago,I would think that Hughes had a good chance of appearing in the High Court......At least you know where you are with a blackboard duster.......I would also acknowledge that Spud Thomson probably was a master of "Throwing the Duster"

There was also the grabbing the hair throwing the said hair onto the drawing board and saying " that's what hair lines are like Boy" .one did it at the academy can't remember who except it wasn't Johnnie Little

Either that or there was no custard left :D
There was a couple of maths teachers at Auchenharvie one who liked to chuck the odd blackboard duster or skelp you on the knuckles with a wooden ruler. Another who would scud you on the erse with a meter stick while commentating on an Aberdeen football match :smt102

For some reason we also had a music teacher that suffered a breakdown.

That looks about right, Scott. My sis and I ( along with several others) took evening art classes with him, a very genial man and it was a pleasure to take his class!
