Presentation to Ayrshire Cup Winners

Ayrshire Cup medals, watches or rings, according to their choice, were presented to members of the Winton Rovers team, winners of the Ayrshire Cup last season, during the interval at Winton Park last Saturday.

Prior to the presentation, Mr William Dickson, retired secretary of the Ayrshire Association, said that he was proud to be present on the occasion for two reasons. The first was that he had been associated with officials of Winton Rovers for over 30 years and had always found the club one of the best managed in the county, The other was that the club had won the Ayrshire Cup in his last season as secretary of the Association.

As a neutral he did not hope that the team would retain the trophy this season but he hoped that they would be clever enough to do so. Mr James McCartney, suc Mr James McCartney, successor to Mr Dickson as secretary of the Association, complimented the club on their success. There was no reason, he said, why Winton Rovers should not be the first club to have their name inscribed on the new gold cup which was replacing the present trophy.

The Rovers president, Mr William Taylor, urged those present to continue in their support of the 'old club'. Players present to receive awards were Tommy Morgan, Willie Frew, Russell Miller, Jacky Thomson, Willie Donnelly, Willie Kearney, Jimmy Muir, Charlie Milligan, Duncan Mair and Willie Scollon. Also receiving awards but not present were Sam Pllu, Robert Adams, Andrew Adams, John Reid and John Cochrane, the latter three being in the forces.

There was a special cheer for trainer David Miller who also received a medal. Eight members of the cup winning team were in Saturday's line-up against Ayr Newton Rovers. The club committee entertained the players to tea after the match.

Eight of the men named in that story are shown in the photo below uploaded by Mike McCann in 2010. They are Sam Pllu, Duncan Mair, Tommy Morgan, Jimmy Muir, Jackie Thomson, John Reid, Willie Kearney and David Miller. They are pictured with the Ayrshire Consolation Cup and Vernon Trophy which they won in 1949.

From top left to bottom right, the men are Sam Pllu, Duncan Mair, G Ballantyne, Tommy Morgan, Jimmy Muir, J Brown; R McGill, Jackie Thomson, John Reid, Neil Hawthorne, Willie Kearney and trainer David Miller.

Remarkably, Willie Kearney was still playing for Winton Rovers in the early 1960s after a short spell with Irvine Meadow. It would be interesting know if any ThreeTowners have further information on that team or are related to any of them.
