It's a grand old team

Post by brian f »

Watching a home Everton game the other day on tv, at the end I heard a familiar tune played over the tannoys- It's a grand old team- wiki suggests Everton and Celtic have reference. I can remember that tune at Ibrox. So which support sung this tune first ...

Maybe my Australian Football club could be a contender... 8)

The Melbourne Football Club is one of the oldest professional sporting clubs in the world, with a proud history dating back to 1858.

The song is definitely played at Goodison when the teams emerge, and sometimes at the end if they've been a "grand old team." I think David Moyes, with his Celtic connection, took the song there? I don't think the Rangers fans ever sang the song at Ibrox. What they did do, however, was to wait for the last line - "And the Glasgow Celtic will be there" - when they added - "Selling bananas."
Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.

Yes Penny Tray and if memory serves the next line was “Two for a tanner!”

Glen Daly recorded the song on several of his LPs.
