Sports trivia - Rangers and Ghost Riders in the sky

Post by Hughie »

At the moment I'm learning the tune 'Ghost riders in the sky' on my moothie. To learn a tune it helps if you know the words. I can't get the proper words into my head because of the words stuck in my head from the school playground - they're clean words, unlike words to some tunes I could mention.

To the tune of Ghost Riders in the Sky:
A good left back came running out one bright and sunny day
And on the turf at Ibrox he came out there to play
And up against him there that day was Misses Waddell's son
The finest player on the field and Scotland's number one.

That's it, anyone remember the rest of it. Yes, I did think of, Yipee aye eh.

Hughie,

The only song I can recall being sung by Rangers fans where somebody's "son" was mentioned referred to Willie Thorton, albeit in a song entitled 'How can you buy Willie Waddell?" There may, of course, have been local corruptions. There often were.

HOW CAN YOU BUY WILLIE WADDELL?

An Englishman landed in Edmiston Drive
And watched Willie Waddell with critical eye.
"How can I buy him?" He asked Mr Struth,
And Bill he replied, "I'll tell you the truth."

How can you buy all the cups that we've won?
And how can you buy Mrs Thorton's son?
How can you buy our big Geordie Young?
And How can you buy Willie Waddell?
Nature bestowed all her gifts with a smile
The right foot, the left foot, the 'noddle'.
When you can buy all these wonderful things,
Then you can buy Willie Waddell.

"I'll give thirty thousand," the Englishman said,
"And also a star," Mr Struth shook his head.
"You can give thirty thousand, stars, moon and sun
But you still can't have Waddell, there is only one."
Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.

Hi Penny,

Thanks for that. I've never heard that one before. Looks like I'll have to stick with 'Yipee aye eh ... Ghost riders in the sky', and start again. 8)

Hughie, The Corries wrote a song to this tune, it was called the Choochter who came from Skye, i think it was a friend of ours who lives in lara that had it,so if i see him i will try and get a copy of it.

Hughie did you ever get the full lyrics of this song. I have been trying to get them since my dad died 5 years ago. I kept asking him to write them down, but alas he didn't.
