The Seugh of the Sea - by Bob Auld

Post by Hughie »

The Seugh of the Sea

I have listened with glee to the songs of the sea
In many of its variable moods
I have walked on the shore, with its long sandy floor
In the night's long solitudes
I have heard the surf roar like a mighty encore
Music to people like me
I am many ways blessed but I also have missed
The luring seugh of the sea.

The smells of the sea are familiar to me
And the healthy tang of the spray
I have seen the gulls glide at the turn of the tide
They never seem to stray
I have seen the bright moon, like a gossamers loom
Sparkling beyond the quay
I am never far away by night or by day
From the luring seugh of the sea.

l have gathered seashells amid the great swells
As the waves rushed over the rocks
I have stood on the tower been sprayed in the shower
From the breakers on Castleweerock
I have watched the sunset, and my eyes have been wet
What a glorious sight to see
But my heart seems to cheer when'er I can hear
The luring seugh of the sea.

I have been to great states where the masters of fate
Held life and death in his palm
I have listened enraptured my heart has been captured
As children sang their sweet Psalms
I have lived as in story, and dream't of great glory
A human feeling you'll agree
Yet I sob with a heart that's breaking apart
For the luring seugh of the sea.

Now where'er I go, it haunts me so
Half forgotten sometimes it seems
Till to bed I creep, where it lulls me to sleep
In a symphony of wondrous dreams
Its something ever near, that I love to hear
Like breezes soft and free
It maybe is droll but its balm to my soul
The luring seugh of the sea.

Bob Auld (real name Bob Scott) wrote so many poems and wee stories about our local area. My favourite is "The Tar Biler Affair". which was a true event that took place on the Brae at Schoolwell Street in Stevenston. Here's a wee bit about Bob: viewtopic.php?p=76660#p76660

I managed to track down some copies of Bob’s poems and ordered them.

Looking forward to reading them over here in Canada.
