The Rabbie Burns was locally known as 'Smalls' because
it was owned and run by a family with the surname Small.
The last member of that family who I remember working
in there was Susan Blair (nee Small) who worked, I think, until
it closed. We played in a football team called Caley United and
that was our home base round about 1976/77. It closed a while
after this along with the Jubilee to make way for a mini regeneration
before what is currently now standing. So, mitchy you'll not be far
away with that date.
Monty,
I was never in the Rabbie Burns, but the Jubilee was the first pub in Saltcoats where I got served while under age. It was only to get a few cans for the shelter on the shore front mind you! I suppose the seating and the toilets in the shelter were on a par with the facilties in the Jubilee at the end of the day

Oh Mitchy you just brought a very old memory back - the first pub where you were served under age - and mine's was Jocks Lodge in Ardrossan - I have absolutely no idea why we ended up in there - but that's where it was.

Mine was, sad to think it'll be no more, The Red Herring.

That's really a coincidence, that subject coming up now. I was with my wife in Glasgow, two weeks ago, and pointed out the Bridge Bar, under the Hielanman's Umbrella in Argyle St. and told her that's where I got my first drink in a pub, age 17, and it was a pint of black and tan. That's what the rest were drinking. We were on our way from the low-level to a Scotland match at Hampden.

Hi Morag,
The Tap Shop (Red Herring) closed its doors last night (25/11/08) for the final time under the current Licensee. At this time it is unknown what will become of it.
A one off of it's kind with the outside toilet. I can still remember waving to the top deck of the A1 buses whilst emptying my bladder. It was one of the many 'Kick off' pubs that you could go to on a Friday night before heading on to the clubs. A right drinking man's pub just like many more of that era: Small's, Windy Ha, The Vic, Bar One, Vernon etc... ect....
Just stumbled across this post , Susan small or blair was my mother in law who I sadly never met. We still have old relics from smalls pub in our home, jonny walker statues from behind the bar etc. it's lovely to see pics of her on this page
I googled Caley Utd and it directed me here.
We were some outfit back then.
Pat and Tommy Cameron, Johnny Fisher, Danny Strachan were the ‘committee’ back when I played for the ‘Caley’
Great memories and some not so great of those times.
