SERIOUS CASE OF ASSAULT – ONE OF THE CREW OF THE CHUSAN STABBED

A seaman named George Joyner is at present in custody in Glasgow on a charge of stabbing HASSAN ALI, one of the crew of the steamer CHUSAN, on Saturday night.

Hassan Ali, who is a coloured man, has been living for some time in the Sailors’ Home, along with several of his shipwrecked companions, while waiting a berth to be provided for him by his former employers, and an ill feeling seems to have sprung up between the blacks and the other seamen in the locality. A quarrel arose among them on Saturday night, in the course of which Ali was stabbed on the shoulder, and it is alleged that the wound was inflicted by the prisoner.

He will be brought before the Western Police Court today, and in all probability remitted to the Sheriff.

£3 in 1874 is equivalent in purchasing power to about £341.47 in 2020, a difference of £338.47 over 146 years.

Indeed a handsome reward and well deserved

ARDROSSAN – A SAILING BOAT SUNK

On Saturday forenoon, a young man on a visit here from London, narrowly escaped death by drowning.

He had gone out alone in a sailing boat and as the management of the sail was too much for him, the boat capsized and sank, while he was thrown into the water. He kept himself afloat with the aid of a board till he was picked up by a boat which was returning with workmen from the wreck of the CHUSAN, and brought him ashore in safety, little the worse of his ducking.

ARDROSSAN PAROCHIAL BOARD

On Thursday evening, the statutory half-yearly meeting was held in the Town Hall, Saltcoats. Mr James Fullerton occupied the chair.

An application by Doctor Stevens to purchase a lair for the erection of a monument to the memory of the seamen who were drowned at the wreck of the steamer CHUSAN was considered. A sum of money had been raised in Ardrossan which was to be applied for this purpose. Some objection was made to the application, as the Cemetery Committee had already refused permission for its erection, but after discussion a motion was carried agreeing to the request of Doctor Steven.

The Chusan monument was erected in Ardrossan Cemetery and is still in fairly good condition. The inscription, now partly-eroded, is 'In memory of George C Johnson, Master and William Miller, Second Mate and the crew of the steamship Chusan who were drowned off the Harbour off Ardrossan on 21 October 1874. Erected by subscription'. The words Faith, Hope and Charity are engraved on the pillar.
