100 YEARS AGO on September 13, 1907
McQueen's International Talking and Singing Pictures may be seen any night in the Conservative Hall, Stevenston, for the modest sum of 2d, 4d or 6d.
On Monday morning the premises of Mr John Kirkwood, butcher, Dockhead Street, Saltcoats, were broken into and the safe blown open with explosives. Fortunately the safe was empty.
At the Bakers' Exhibition being held in London this week, Mr James Morrison, Stevenston, was highly commended for his shortbread.
Saltcoats Burgh Rate has been fixed at 3 shillings and 10d (pence) and increase of 10 over last year.
The building plans for tenements in Well Street and the Roman Catholic Chapel, West Kilbride, were passed yesterday by the Northers District Committee of the County Council.
The Eglinton Medal and Championship of Saltcoats Bowling Green have been won by Mr John Hamilton
The West Kilbride Lighting and Scavenging Committee have advertised for a lamplighter and scavenger at wages of 22(£1.10p)per week.
50 YEARS AGO on September 13, 1957
Special rail facilities have been arranged for the personnel of the Nato fleet on the occasion of its visit to the Firth of Clyde from the 14th, 15th and 16th September There will be special trains to Glasgow on each date. To welcome the naval personnel the Scottish Region has produced two descriptive booklets for those going ashore, providing information on train services and places of historical and scenic interest within easy reach.
The Firth of Clyde was in angry mood on Saturday last and huge waves some 40 feet high swept over the harbour walls and esplanade. Because of the storm there were no sailings between Ardrossan and Arran, traffic was diverted to Fairie and and the steamer, Irish Coast instead of sailing from Ardrossan to Belfast on her last Crossing of the season sailed, from Greenock
Ayrshire Head teachers will be asked to include talks on smoking in health instruction classes. This follows a Scottish Home department circular on the special report of the Medical Research Council on cancer through tobacco inhalation.
On Wednesday 4th September, six buses left Barr Street, Ardrossan conveying 180 old people and friends to Billy Smart's Circus at Kilmarnock The trip was organised by Ardrossan Old People's Welfare Committee who provided the transport.
On Wednesday evening of last week at Portland Park Troon, a football team representing Troon banks was opposed by a team Representing Ayr banks and in an enjoyable game which produced flashes of skill against a background of wholehearted effort, the visitors emerged the winners by six goals to three.
Ardrossan Police Court. Before Provost Hogarth at the Burgh Police court on Monday, a seaman on the crew on M.V.Lairdsmoor pleaded guilty to behaving in a disorderly manner cursing and swearing and committing a breach of the peace. The provost imposed a fine of £3 with the alternative of 20 days imprisonment.
A new modem bakehouse has been brought into operation this week by the Stevenson Cooperative Limited. The premises situated at Moorpark Road, are thoroughly up to date and present a picture of cleanliness and brightness with their white tiled walls and and gleaming machinery.
25 YEARS AGO on September 10, 1982
A major harbour facelift could be on the cards for Ardrossan. The Scottish Development Agency now look almost certain to go ahead with a major feasibility study into environmental improvements of the harbour area. The new ferry for the Ardrossan to Arran route should be ready by the summer of 1984 and if this could be coupled with a facelift operation at the harbour, Ardrossan could reap the benefit.
A new business club has been set up to improve trade and bring together shop owners and firms' directors to discuss problems in Ardrossan, Saltcoats, and Stevenston. The Three Towns Business Club results from a meeting of representatives from the business community meeting in April where it was decided that such a club could be of value. A steering committee was therefore formed to carry out the formation of the Three Towns Club.
Commercial shark fishing is to be carried out on a regular basis from Ardrossan Harbour, reviving the industry in the Clyde after a 300 year break. After last week's landing of a basking shark at the harbour (as reported in the Herald) the skipper and owner of the 'Franleon' Mr Howard McCrindle has confirmed he has revived the business.
