Clearly, there used to be many more churches in the Threetowns than exist today. Some have changed their purpose from religious to nonreligious, while others have been demolished.
The history of local churches makes for interesting reading, not least for the many schisms and unifications that took place in the 18th & 19th centuries.
I found a reference to a United Presbyterian church in Saltcoats (1804). Apparently, at one point there were two churches from this denomination in Saltcoats. Here is an example communion token from the Associate Congregation (United Presbyterian) Church, First Minister, James Ellis (1804-1852), dated 1804. Note that the minister's initials are present on the token.

Even in the 3Ts history we see the wholesale splintering of believers over abstruse theological points - and that's just Christianity.
Some people think the idea of "interfaith" gatherings is uplifting.
I've come to believe the jury is out.
