I do not know if any of you are aware of the TV reality show " Cause of Oak island". Well in one episode a researcher comes forward with an interesting story. It is about the Kights Templer who fled France to escape death by the king. They fled with treasure and sail from France to Scotland docking in the naturally bay know now as Ardrossan harbour. From Saltcoats they made their way with their treasure to Kilwinning abbey.

I remember reading the same legend about 30 years ago in the book "Foucault's Pendulum" by Umberto Eco - the man who wrote "The Name of the Rose", which Sean Connery filmed. Here's an extract:

"(I read) 'In 1307, Philip the Fair decided to arrest all the Templars in France. There’s a legend that two days before Philip issued the arrest warrant, the ox-drawn hay wain left the enclave of the Temple in Paris for an unknown destination. They say that hidden in the wain was a group of knights led by one Aumont. These knights supposedly escaped, took refuge in Scotland, and joined a Masonic lodge in Kilwinning. According to the legend, they became part of the society of Freemasons, who served as guardians of the secrets of the Temple of Solomon. (Ah, here we go, I thought... this writer, too, claims that the origins of Masonry lie in the Templars’ escape to Scotland. A story that’s been rehashed for a couple of centuries, with no foundation to it)".

Hi Exile,
why do you say that there is no foundation to the legend?
Do you have any facts to back that statement up, or are you just passing on what you have heard along the way?
These could be typical examples of fake news, (one way or the other) where stories get passed on for long enough that they become the 'truth.'

Hi, John Donnelly, I can see how I confused the issue - apologies - everything in Italics was lifted directly from the extract of Eco's book, when the character was speaking/thinking in the first person, not me.
I would hesitate to say what the truth of the matter is.

Hi Exile,
thanks for the explanation.
I was being sceptically nit-picking after all Trump's fake news stories flying back and forward.
A slightly less sceptical JD. (That's a big riddy, by the way.)
