Jenny Mann was Archie Leach's daughter and took over the iron mongers shop when Archie died.
I never heard that they put beer in their batter. I doubt it very much as they were always a very old fashioned family. We lived across the road from them, and I knew them well.

Archie Leach's daughter
That would account for my gran calling the shop "Leach's"

Reid whose shop was at the corner of Glebe street whose fish suppers were superb
Reids Chip shop was owned by Alan Mann, but it was still called Reid's,
Mrs.Mann owned the Ironmongers in New Street , think her name was Jenny Mann
Alan Mann worked in ICI and did the Chip Shop in the evenings

There was a Ferguson's cafe , which might have evolved into Richard Park cafe, I'm certain that was next door to Mrs.Newall the Chemist
Alan was hardly in the chip shop spending most of his time in the Cross Keyes. If I remember correctly he worked in Beith.

Reid's chip shop was run by the Dunbar family. Mrs Mann's maiden name was Dunbar.

I don't think Archie Leach had a daughter only a niece Betty.

Wonder if that was the same Ferguson family who had the Ailsa tearooms near the Ardeer Hall. That was Bobby Ferguson's family. Bobby was goalkeeper for Kilmarnock, West ham and Scotland and was from Ardrossan, but I believe his mum was from Stevenston - Bobby Ferguson is in Adelaide now.

Madge, I'm wondering if you are correct. The old memory is letting me down here.
As I remember it now that you have raised the question, Jenny was married to Danny Dunbar who worked in the Post Office.
