Gallagher and Lyle - Ardrossan Ice Cream Parlour
Gallagher and Lyle, of music fame, apparently rehearsed above an Ardrossan Ice Cream Parlour.
"After an apprenticeship in Ayrshire bands – rehearsing above an Ardrossan ice-cream parlour and playing for American servicemen based at Dunoon – the pair moved to London in 1967 and got themselves hired by the Beatles' Apple Publishing."
What premises are they talking about?

This page http://www.rockingscots.co.uk/Pakk.htm suggests it was just Benny at the time, in a Saltcoats band called the Tulsans. Dennis Donald was also in the band, and he owned a cafe.
The "room above the cafe" sounds like the upstairs at the Castlewirock (now the Flask)

Bruce,
Thanks for that - an ice cream parlour in Saltcoats then, not Ardrossan!

I do remember them rehersing at the monoghans in blakely road. All us poor bungalows boys wanted to be drummers.
Then we'd stand outside the hays music shop staring at the drum kit for hours.
Great days, the stuff the makes folk who they are.

Gallagher & Lyle toured the UK in the early 1970s with ex-Small Faces stalwart Ronnie Lane in what was called "The Passing Show" - a big marquee, with dancing girls, and Viv Stanshall for comedy effect.
When G&L had to leave halfway through the tour, they were replaced by two boys from Kilwinning/Ardrossan called Lucas & McCulloch.

The above photo was taken in March 1964 In the room above the Eglinton Café, the café was owned by Denis Donald's mother and not Denis. It was run by his brother Victor.
