I think you're the man to crack this problem! Anyone who can find a thriving palm tree in Ardrossan......
The tropical climate in Ardrossan means that there are many palm trees like this one in Glasgow Street. :D

We had a couple in our front garden, but they foundered with the low temperatures two winters ago.

People tend to think warm, balmy or hot weather for palms, but some are hardy to 10F or lower..
Some are weed trees here, I've got Mexican fan palms sprouting all over the garden.

Here's a wee twist in the search for the foundation stone. I came across this old newspaper article this morning.

INTERESTING FIND AT FRASERBURGH

While a squad of harbour employees were engaged yesterday (18 August 1912) diverting the salvage pipe near Fraserbugh Fish Market they came across a large square stone bearing a beautifully engraved silver plate in excellent preservation. On the plate being removed a glass bottle containing coins current in the reign of George III and an Aberdeen newspaper were discovered. This interesting memorial proved to be the foundation stone of the south pier of Fraserburgh Harbour designed by Robert Stephenson, Civil Engineer, Edinburgh, and constructed at a cost of £6,150. The stone was found embedded in the soil at a depth of about 9 feet.

Our foundation stone therefore is maybe buried in the garden at Princes Street as opposed to ever having been on the boundary wall or inside the building?

PT:
That's one helluva find. Well done you.
That more or less gives a clear picture of what you would be looking for.
A quick look back to your post at the start of this thread, (the newspaper article), also shows exactly
where you should be looking. The following is quoted from that article:
"At three o'clock, the principle Foundation Stone, at the point where the Pier is connected with the shore,
was laid by the Grand Master, with the usual solemnities".
If you can get someone to verify at what point the Pier meets the land/shore, then you've probably cracked it ?
Just don't go digging it up, there are laws against that sort of thing.
Well done, good find.

P.T. if you don't mind young man, would you kindly remove that metal detector from behind my head. My glasses are setting it off and the beeping is annoying, it's having a detrimental affect to the overall ambiance of the harbour area while partaking in my constitutional.
