Power before Power Stations?

Prior to Hunterston power stations being built in late 1950 how did North Ayrshire get their power from? As this was a time before main power stations and large pylons bringing power to areas where did the power to supply all homes in north Ayrshire come from?

There was a substantial power station in Kilmarnock, rated 85MW, decommissioned and demolished in the late 70s

there was also one at barony colliery in auchinleck but i suspect that was for cumnock and doon valley

I don't remember much, not of interest to a wee lassie, but seems gas was the answer, there were 2 big things close by St. John's school.

Kilmarnock certainly is an option, I am trying to figure out how a 420kv cable would have got to west kilbride as big pylons hadd not been used and small roadside ones not powerful enough and having it underground all that way would be a big challenge. I am sure 420KV is much more than a standard village would use.
