I have made these Soda Scones (8) today and they turned out great. Easy too and only 5 ingredients.

I don't know about Howies rolls, I've made this and it compares with Morrison's / Wonderloaf rolls.
1/2 oz or 3 tspns dried yeast,
1tspn caster sugar
3 lbs plain flour(save some for dusting)
11/2 pti warm water
4-6 tsps salt
11/2 oz lard.
Reconstitute yeast with sugar and 1/4 pint of the water 'till frothy. Mix flour and salt, rub in lard.add yeast and remainder of water and mix till dough 'sticks' together. Knead thoroughly, 10 mins on floured surface, place in 2 warmed greased loaf pans or on baking sheets..let raise, covered with cloth (or I suppose, plastic wrap) 45 - 50 mins and bake 425 - 450, 10 -15 mins for rolls, 1lb loaves 35 -40, 2lb loaves 45 -50 mins. Recipe says it makes 2 large, 4 small loaves.
