Such a shame to see this magnificent Baronial style building in such a state.

What happened?
How did it get from one state to the other?

Surfing for news updates on the death of 6 children in a Derby fire on 11 May, I came across a newspaper article reporting the death of 6 Glasgow boys in a dormitory fire at Seafield Residential School, Ardrossan, on the night of 10/11 February 1952.
More On this and the most recent fire at the school.

A photo of the old Seafield School from around 2003, we used to play football against the boys back in the day.

Did this not become a care home at some time? Or am I thinking of another lovely building.

Morag
It may be that you are thinking of Abbotsford house which was converted into a care home and is just a few yards nearer the greasy pole.

If I remember right, it was always a care home in the sense that it was a City of Glasgow Corporation establishment for disadvantaged children and latterly an extension of Quarrier's Homes.
Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.
