Gilbert Brown

I am looking for any information regarding my grandfather Gilbert Brown. He died around 1940/1941 in an explosion. He worked at Ardeer. My mom, Moira Scott Brown, was only 5 yrs old and has no recollection of him. I believe he is buried in a cemetery in Ardrossan. My grandmother Martha Scott Brown would rarely talk of him and is also deceased. My mom lived in Saltcoats until she was 23 then she immigrated to the united states. Her side of the family has always been somewhat of a mystery to us. My sister and I are planning a trip to Scotland, we would like to bring some of our brother's ashes ( recently deceased) to place at our grandfather's grave. Any information will be helpful. The last time I was in Scotland I was only 6 (39 now) I only have vague memories. Thanks!

Jocelyn,

I visited family plots at Ardrossan Cemetery today and then went to look at some of the 'HMS Dasher' graves nearby. As I was turning away from the latter these photo opportunities caught my eye. I could hardly believe it.

Morag,

I was actually sitting in my car ready to go when the headstone caught my eye. I then had to recite GILBERT BROWN about ten times before it clicked how I knew the name. The Auld Yin, who was with me, thought I had taken a wee turn. I then got a row for blaspheming in exclamation when I realised the connection .

Meg,

If you're 5 foot 10, as I am, and stand looking at the Dasher graves, all of which have low level headstones, you find yourself staring at Gilbert Brown's headstone. The only skill was in finally remembering why the name rang a bell.
