Talking of newspaper pokes, we used to get said homemade bags with sugar in them to dook stalks of rhubarb in.
We had a neighbour in Clyde Terrace who was a fantastic baker and her two kids always had BROWN sugar with their rhubarb - now that WAS posh

We had Oz visitors a couple of years ago who thought eating a banana mashed onto toast for breakfast was strange!

Anybody ever tried bread and butter spread with cornflakes?
Or my all-time favourite cheese and jam?
Or one I learned about when I lived in Newcastle. An old-time favourite of the coalminers going way back. They had a sandwich with a slice of onion between the slices for their piece. As their mouths were full of coal dust they needed something very strong that they could taste.

JD.

Not had a piece in cheese and jam for years. Used to work with a wee wumin who almost every day had a piece in strawberry jam and smokey bacon crisps :smt102

My Dad loved cheese & jam sandwiches. I preferred bread and butter with hot chips and drenched in brown sauce....lovely.
I often make myself a sandwich with butter, raw onion rings and some drops of Maggi seasoning sauce. It was one of my German granny's favourites. I'd never heard of it before we moved to Germany though.
Bread, butter and a sliced apple on top, or a thick layer of chocolate sprinkles were other German favourites.

Have you ever tried Zwiebelmett? Never had the bottle to try it (even when drunk). I'll be in Hamburg next month maybe this time :cool

No, Bonzo, I've never tried Zwiebelmett. The whole German side of my family loved it but I can't bring myself to eat any raw meat. I used to fry it first and then eat it with a roll (Mettburger).

Enjoy yourself in Hamburg. 8)
