My faither used to make us a piece on jam, quartered and dipped in batter then deep fried.
Sometimes that was tea.

Hughie,
When you said earlier a "piece on jam - on a shovel" did you mean "on" a shovel or "from" a shovel. My first inclination was you meant a big piece - and then, remembering you worked in Winton Foundry, it occurred to me that like others I've heard of you may have heated/toasted your pieces on a shovel over an open furnace?????

No, PT. It was part of the street game "Truth, Dare or Promise. I remember a common dare was to knock on a neighbour's door and ask for a piece on jam on a shovel. Maybe that was just in Whitlees Cresent.Penny Tray wrote:Hughie,

The truth, dare or promise I think might have been part of the other street game "Kerb & Wall".

How posh are you Little Plum!!!!! We had never HEARD of tuna fish when I was a wean, never mind sweetcorn. Brown bread wasn't something we ever had in our house - if we were going "upmarket" it was a pan loaf. I remember my parents saying that someone who had a "pan loaf" accent, had a "put on" posh accent.little plum wrote:Brown bread , Tuna fish mixed with salad cream, sweet corn in it is o.k.

oooo, salmon and cucumber sandwiches, yum!
Seems we called it American pan bread / loaf and it was usually for visitors. Give me Wonderloaf any day or well fired rolls from Pops.
