Note from the past behind framed photo

Post by Hughie »

Scots born Australian lady discovers a note from her dad seventy years on behind a framed photo of him.
Nice wee story: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-10-02/ ... /100497946

Perhaps get a good photo to leave to each of your kids and maybe one to each grandkid with a personal message. Get the photo mounted and hide a personal message behind each photo. Wish my parents could have done such a thing.

This poem was amongst some old photos of my mothers. It's not signed, and there's no date, but being written in pencil, I think it would be in the 40's or 50's, before the biro was invented. I don't know for sure but I expect it would have been my fathers handwriting. I've printed the front page, the back page was half as long.

Someday I'll cross the border back to Scotland
Though it may be when I'm three score years and ten
Just to see again the moon rise over Scotland
And to see the sun go down in Arran Glen
Just to see again the splendour of the hills
and the winding road that leads right down to the sea
or to sit beside a trout stream near Perth
and to know you are in the finest land on earth
The English came and tried to take it from us
At Bannockburn we cut their legions down
But we might as well have let them win the battle
for now Scotlnd is ruled by London Town.
The winds that blow across the fields of Scotland,
are scented by the heather as they blow
and the Highlanders up North all speak a language, yes
a language the the English do not know.
They say there's going to be a life hereafter, If that be so
I'll give the Lord my thanks
If He'll grant my wish and let me make my Heaven here
in Scotland on Loch Lomonds Bonnie Banks.

Would anyone know the origins of this poem? I don't think it was invented by my father!

glenshena- I had a look .It could be the Scottish version of Galway Bay. But dont take my word for it. :)

GALWAY BAY
(Arthur Colahan)

If you ever go across the sea to Ireland,
Then maybe at the closing of your day,
You will sit and watch the moon rise over Cladagh
And see the sun go down on Galway Bay.

Just to hear again the ripple of the trout stream,
The women in the meadows making hay;
And to sit beside a turf fire in the cabin
And watch the barefoot gossoons at their play.

For the breezes blowing o'er the sea to Ireland,
Are perfumed by the heather as they blow;
And the women in the uplands digging praties,
Speak a language that the strangers do not know.

For the strangers tried top come and teach us their way
They scorned us just for being what we are;
But they might as well go chasing after moonbeams
Or light a penny candle from a star.

And if there is going to be a life hereafter,
And somehow I am sure there's going to be,
I shall ask my God to let me make my heaven
In that dear land across the Irish Sea.

If you ever go across the sea to Ireland,
Then maybe at the closing of your day,
You will sit and watch the moon rise over Cladagh
And see the sun go down on Galway Bay.

Posted on behalf of member "Glenshena", (Jean).

Hi Hughie. My computer Is ko so I would ask you if possibile to put this post card on McBlethers lounge on the above topic. I found It among my mothers old photos when I was over at Christmas. The postmark says 1953 when my father was in a care home in Kirkmichael for his asthma paid for by ICI. The PC says:
How do you like my new house children? Everything Is very posh. Daddy has to make his own bed in the morning, thats what I dont like and we go to bed at 8.30 so I'm in bed before you boys and girls. I'm Just a wee baby again.
Yours truly, Daddy.
