Journalism

Post by stivis »

Journalism?
I find the language used by alleged journalist , quite embarrassing ,
A favourite of mine is the use of the word "cops"
The word was used initially in the journalistic sense in one of the red tops( probably the "Current Bun") and spread from there.
If I were to be reading a broadsheet, ( or giant pdf ) and see it used as it always is , i regard it as sloppy at best
The word "police" has six letters, two more than the alternative
OK , an additional pronoun ( that is the current term ) may have to be used.

Red Tops is an expression for the likes of the Mirror ,Record and Star , it then took in the rest of the tabloids .More or less
the Sun and the Record don't seem to know how to spell "police"
The Herald now always use the word as does the Scotsman, probably Andrew Neill's influence , all the local rags followed on

Incidentally I only used the word "cops" as an example

PS the Saturday Guardian could last you to wednesday

Cops comes from Copper , which comes from "someone who catches" a thing, animal or person or "cops a cold" or "cop a load of that"

Old Bill is used in some parts of Scotland
