The accusations coming thick and fast, I always had to get the details from about 5 sites WiKi seemed to delete some details. And to be honest I was sick of looking it up

Re: Scottish NHS
Listen, guys - My family have received fantastic support from the nhs in England.
Re: Scottish NHS
The post has Nothing to do with England v Scotland.
It the fact that in 1913 Scotland started health service, in part due to Scotland recognised the work environment was causing problems, and those in charge took action,
Beverage was 30 odd years later, and Bevan more
My mother spoke of getting Diphtheria as a child, I have no idea of the year, but would be about 1938
ARDROSSAN & SALTCOATS JOINT HOSPITAL circa 1900
ARDROSSAN FEVER HOSPITAL built circa 1880-90 demolished 1960s
DALRY COTTAGE HOSPITAL
DAVIDSHILL INFECTIOUS DISEASES HOSPITAL, DALRY........If you leave Dalry on the Glasgow road, just before the railway bridge take a left Courthill Street hang right It still exists (as a building)
KILWINNING INFECTIOUS DISEASES HOSPITAL
ROCKVALE CHILDREN’S WELFARE HOME, CANAL STREET, SALTCOATS
Dr Robert Daniel Lawrence who goes virtually unknown as with most of the pioneers, of course Alexander Fleming is known
If I hadn't posted this Not one of you would have known,Would you?

No I wouldn’t have known that without the post - thanks stivis. I also read somewhere that Nobel had their own free medical service for employees at Ardeer before the NHS.

Re: Scottish NHS
Thank you Stivis. As you said I would never have known about this had you not posted the article. You know that is what I love about this forum. We get to know about things that have happened in the past both in the threetowns and elsewhere in our amazing Scottish land. I've learned so much over the years that i probably wouldnt have if I'd still stayed there.
There are so many creations and inventions that have come from Scotland. Keep posting all the wonderful articles that you post.

Re: Scottish NHS
Yes but, it was not altruistic,Nobel was always about the money,, the provision of the facility cost less than the cost of the "down time",
Take for example a dental appointment, a worker puts on an appointment at their local (to their home) surgery they are not working for at least 4 hours(travel etc) possibly more.
Compared to the on site facility down time. Half an hour max one hour, and although the worker is paid, and in the belief that it's wonderful....Reality is the benefit is to the company and their purse
That is only part of my personal and somewhat radical belief that ( I have only met one person that had the same thoughts on Nobel) Nobel actually wrecked Stevenston
Re: Scottish NHS
Hi Meg I had Dental work done at Ardeer it was one of the best equip surgeries in Ayrshire also spent a lot of time in the ambulance room
having physio . Had a few jobs in my day, but Ardeer would have to be among the best employer ever they looked after you ..

Re: Scottish NHS
Yes, I'd always thought it was mutually beneficial to have their cradle to grave care - but I know ICI encouraged employees to stand for town and county council to block industrial development ensuring their full workforce - the garnock valley sewer renewal was a case in point.Sarah wrote: ↑Wed May 20, 2020 6:59 am Hi Meg I had Dental work done at Ardeer it was one of the best equip surgeries in Ayrshire also spent a lot of time in the ambulance room

Re: Scottish NHS
They were a good company to work for, even allowing for the dangerous materials that were handled there. They however actively discouraged the three town councils from attracting other industries to the area.
Now they have taken their business elsewhere and left the area desolate.
Regarding Alfred Nobel, since he died in 1896 he can hardly be blamed for the management decisions taken during the last hundred years.

Re: Scottish NHS
The Canadian universal health care service (Medicare) was founded by a Scotsman named Tommy Douglas. Born in Falkirk, later in life a Baptist preacher then a Canadian politician and leader of the New Democratic Party (Socialist) . Several years ago he was voted the greatest Canadian ever by the general populace.
