ANZAC DAY

Post by Hughie »

ANZAC day is commemorated in both Australia and New Zealand on the 25th of April each year. This legendary anti-war song, written and performed by Scottish expatriate, Eric Bogle is so very powerful.

Hi Hughie,
I had the same thoughts as Meg.
This is not the version we sang at school.
I had a lump in my throat at the end.
Getting emotional in my old age. :(

Andrew Fisher from Crosshouse was the Australian Prime Minister during a large part of the first world war. Regarding the soldiers:
They had enlisted with mixed motives: to serve King and Empire, to have an adventure, to see the world, to do the right thing. One man in five had been born in Britain; many enlisted in the hope of a trip home before seeing active service.
Quote is from a page on the BBCs history section explaining the situation at that time: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/worldwars/ ... a_01.shtml
