Nice follow-up PT. It would be interesting to see how many others from the district where transported to Australia as convicts. We know there was the man who assaulted Mr Warner of Stevenston, and the woman who stole three hens from a Saltcoats farm. See the topic: 23 August - Stevenston

GLASGOW HERALD

OPENING OF BELLAHOUSTON PARK

Bellahouston, the latest public park acquired by the Corporation of Glasgow, will be opened on Saturday. The gates will be thrown open at 10 o’clock in the morning, and between five and seven o’clock in the evening the band of the Gordon Highlanders will play a select programme of music.

[Later to become the principal location of Pope John Paul’s visit to Glasgow on 1 June 1982, an event at which, I’m sure, many Threetowners were present.]

AYR – A TOO COMFORTABLE POORHOUSE

Yesterday at the quarterly meeting of the Kyle Union Poorhouse Board a minute of the House Committee bore that the visiting officer of the Board of Supervision reported that the house was clean and in good order. He was rather afraid, however, that it was made too comfortable, especially for the male inmates, and he was sure that if the use of tobacco was stopped and tea making prohibited the number of males in the house would decrease.

There will be shooting for the society's Butt prize, and for Mr Gairdner's cup, as well as for prizes given by the National Society of Scottish Archers, and sweepstakes at long range. The ordinary business of the society will then be transacted. After which shooting at papingo (including at the same time the competition for Mr Gilkison’s silver bugle) will begin, and the society's silver arrow will be shot for alter dinner.

Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald

Queen's Bounty.

Dr Auld, Holmwood, has received the Queen's donation of £3 to Mrs McAldon, Lyleston, mother of the triplets born a few days ago. The following is a copy of the letter:- “Lieut.-Colonel Sir Fleetwood Edwards is commanded to acknowledge receipt of Dr Auld's letter of the 4th inst., and to send him the enclosed Post Office Order for three pounds, as a donation from Her Majesty the Queen to Mrs McAldon.-Privy Purse Office, Buckingham Palace, S.W., 6th July, 1899." Seldom, if ever, has the “Queen's Bounty” been donated to a Segtonian, and Mrs. McAldon is to be congratulated in being the first to receive the honorarium.
