Re: Were these always frozen?

Rowanside,

It was Betty Hendry's indeed. Am I correct in saying we pronounced them JEW-BLY as opposed to JUB-BLY?

Bobby,

Are they still the same shape?

Re: MIVVI

George, This'll sound daft but about 3 months ago that wee man, is it Norris, who plays the shopkeeper in Coronation Street said, if I picked him up right - "Anybody fancy a Mivvi?" I've had a notion for one ever since. At least I'm not alone in remembering them. They were a treat in my da...

Re: How it maybe was - 1892

Little Plum, "Dresses", I think, is just another expression for 'breaking' and 'training'. Perhaps this is where 'dressage' comes from in relation to horses. Bleeding, I understand, was the practice of cutting an animal's throat to allow it to pass away more or less painlessly other, of co...

Re: Footballs

Little Plum, Every boy that had a 'tubie' will know what you're talking about. Some had a braddle to lace it, other used a dinner fork. This is how the professionals did it: http://cache2.asset-cache.net/xc/HT3712-001.jpg?v=1&c=IWSAsset&k=2&d=2AC75F6FAA20674C31766756D3299A01A54F40EF0263D...

Were these always frozen?

Were these always frozen or were they actually sold as drinks. The shop we got them from in Rowanside Terrace, Ardrossan, only sold them from the deep-freeze. This way they lasted for two hours by which time you were hypothermic. And frozen, there was no easy way to devour them. http://i.daily...

Skittery Winter!

Did anybody else's faither terrorise them with the threat that the last person up or anyone that slept in on Hogmanay would be referred to as "SKITTERY WINTER" for the rest of the following year?

What were the other customs and traditions related to Hogmany/New Year in the Three Towns?

How it maybe was - 1892

What the streets of Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Stevenston may have been looked like over a hundred years ago is perhaps be reflected in the BURGH POLICE (SCOTLAND) ACT 1892 and the controls the authorites sought to impose at that time. The following three sub-sections of Section 381 of the Act, and th...

Great photos of Chapelill Farm, especially the one with snow covered Arran in the background.
