Re: Banks in Saltcoats and Stevenston

wellparkno9 - it was 89 Dockhead Street, right at the Flemings, Chapelwell Street corner. Google tells me it's now a shop called Cover-Up.

janp - J.S. Paterson - remember him so very well. He was a gentleman.

Re: Banks in Saltcoats and Stevenston

I started working at RBS Dockhead Street in 1970. In my first 5 minutes the manager took me into his room and let me know that the sign above the door, ‘Royal Bank of Scotland’ had only been up for less than a year and this was a National Commercial branch, still using their systems and be mindful o...

Re: Saltcoats newsagents Starks to close after 112 years

Thanks for all the details about where the A T May shops were. But I'm still no further forward as to, were A T Mays taken over by Thomas Cook. JD. :( John, did a bit of digging for you. In 1970/71 I worked at Royal Bank of Scotland in Dockhead Street and AT Mays had a strong connection at that bra...

Re: Intimations 10 July 2019

I’m very sorry to read about the death of Robert Howie. My dad started work as a lorry driver for his father Allan Howie long before Robert took over the business. He drove for them for decades and only stopped when his eyesight began to fail in the 1990’s. My commiserations to a very nice family.

>GLASGOW HERALD >27 MAY 1970 > >MAN DIED UNDER SON’S TRUCK John and Jessie Muir were our neighbours on Clyde Terrace and I remember this tragedy. John Snr loved and raced greyhounds and I think he also kept pigeons at the back of the house. In my mind I can still see Jessie heading off in the summer...

Meg, Laurence is correct. Johnnie only had a sister, Geraldine. David was his cousin.

Re: Old betting shops in the three towns

Worked in there early 70’s and it was a strange wee building. No security, no alarm and two open counters. It wouldn’t happen these days. Great customers and staff though. It was the only RBS office I worked in where a jotter for messages was kept ‘round the back’. Almost every day somebody would o...

Thank you for these Susan. I left in 1970 but I can still remember the faces of many mentioned in the articles, especially the senior boys and girls who were all in my year(s) at the Academy.
