Re: Back on the wireless again...

Re: Chimney Sweeps

We were in an “electric house” when I was growing up, and then gas - had coal when very young but can’t really remember it. but can remember going to gran’s house when she “had the sweep in”, and all the furniture being covered in sheets. She and 2 of my aunts would get their chimneys done on the sa...

Re: Threetowners cycling thread

Well done! I had a trip to Portencross and Largs last weekend. Yesterday, decided to go the other direction. Looked a reasonable day outside. Bright and dry, but cloudy. And since it's officially sort-of-spring, I don't need to wear the Big Gloves anymore! However, couldn't find the ordinary gloves,...

Re: Farm called 'Dungarvon' near Dalry?

I have just remembered one of my gran’s stories - the “Turned Row”. There were various “Miner’s Rows” in the Peesweep - small terraced cottages, with either 1 or 2 rooms, and outside toilets. http://www.scottishmining.co.uk/133.html There was “Peesweep Row”, “Furnace Row”, “New Single Row”, “Double ...

Re: Farm called 'Dungarvon' near Dalry?

Never heard of a “Dungarvon” in Dalry. It could well be a mis-spelling of what is now "Dalgarven”. And it is indeed midway between Dalry and Kilwinning. Dalgarven Mill is now a museum of country life. They may have records of previous farmers. Maybe worth dropping them a line. https://www.dalga...

Re: Back on the wireless again...

I know there are a few fans of Andy Chung here.
Have a look at this:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m ... e-takeaway

It's a BBC Alba programme (mainly in English!) featuring 6 chinese people living in Scotland, discussing life and food. Andy is one of them.

Re: Threetowners cycling thread

Great day for a bike ride today! Weather was fine, but breezy at the coast, so I stayed mostly inland. Hadn't planned to go too far, originally intended just to head along to Kilwinning or Irvine then back, but ended up in Kilmarnock! Saltcoats, along the High Rd to Stevenston, Dubbs Rd to Kilwinnin...

Re: In This Year

The second electronic telephone exchange in Scotland was opened at Dalry. I lived in Dalry at that time. Didn’t know there was anything special about the exchange, but I recall around 1970ish, finding lots of offcuts of BT cable - both the overhead cables that went to each house and the fat multico...
