Re: Tontine Inn, Ardrossan

Bob, Tontine is a fund to which a group of people contribute, the benefits ultimately acccruing to the last survivor or those surviving for a specified time. I had never heard of this until looking into this topic. It's an interesting way to invest or gamble. You put me in mind however, of a "m...

Re: Tontine Inn, Ardrossan

Meg/Hughie, I had obviously thought of Montfode Tower too but didn't think you would be able to see it from the shore road. This of course relies on the road being the same then as it it now. I ruled out too the possibility of their carriage going up that road. There isn't any through road, is there...

Re: Fishing Season/ Swimming Season

And if the water didn't turn you blue the restriction to your blood flow from the rubber band on your wrist sure did.
And Bob, nowhere in the world is there changing rooms like those ones. They were cruel. Why did we go there?

Thanks for that Morag. I'll have a look in that area the next time I'm down. Sounds likely.

Re: Castlepark Sunset - by Bob Auld

Hughie, You are too far on. The entry to Castlepark is situated immediately where the grounds of the hospital end as you travel from Kilwinning to Irvine. As its name suggests it comprises part of the former grounds of Eglinton Castle Estate. The garage you're thinking of, I think called Ravenspark,...

Re: Tontine Inn, Ardrossan

Morag, I thought of that too but it's a bit out of the way en route to Greenock and I don't think it fits in with her description of ascending a hill, etc. I was having a look at a historical map just there and as you left West Kilbride en route towarrds Largs, with the main streeet on your left, ri...

Re: Tontine Inn, Ardrossan

In John Galt's novel - 'The Ayrshire Legatees' (published 1821), previously mentioned by georgersweir , Miss Rachel Pringle, having left the Tontine Inn, Ardrossan, en route to Greenock, said in a letter to Miss Isabella Todd - "The road, after leaving Ardrossan, lies along the shore. The blast...
