Re: Threetowners cycling thread
Today was the "Round Stra'ven 50". I decided at the last minute to enter, It's a 50 mile route, starting and finishing in Strathaven, and looping round the various villages around the town. All for charity - from the entry fees and donations they raise about 10k a year, which gets distribu...

Re: Threetowners cycling thread
Sounds like a great trip. I've not been on a ferry this year, but still time I guess.
I did see 3 ferries this morning though - went from Saltcoats, through Ardrossan (ferry #1), Largs (#2) and on to Wemyss bay (#3). Turned there, and back by the same route.

Re: Threetowners cycling thread
Got out this morning - first time in 3 weeks! From Saltcoats, along Dubbs rd to Kilwinning. Fiveroads, Benslie then Torranyard. Headed towards Stewarton, about half way there branched left and followed some farm roads, eventually ending up at Dunlop. Through the village and past the station, then mo...

Re: Threetowners cycling thread
I've had other things on my mind for the last few weeks..... being "Father of the Bride" takes a lot of time and effort
Hopefully back out this weekend, if the weather is kind.

Re: Threetowners cycling thread
Just had a look at both on Strava. Both are about the same gradient - 3% - and both are relatively "steady", in that it's a constant climb. Alpine store to first dam is 3.5km, Devil's Beeftub is 10.5 - so it's 3 times the climb to the dam. Descent after the beef tub was great - it was pret...

Re: Threetowners cycling thread
Yeah, I've never really cycled after dark, other than once or twice on roads I knew well. This was different. I had my GPS to keep me on the route, but most of the time didn't really need it - plenty of others were doing the run, so there were always a few tail-lights ahead of me to follow. And you ...

Last night was the "Ride to the Sun".... longest ride I've ever done. Carlisle to Edinburgh. Started mid afternoon, bike along to Kilwinning, train to Glasgow, then train to Carlisle. Arrived there about 6 and made my way to the park where it starts off. As organised rides go, this one is ...

Re: ww2 bomber in Saltcoats harbour
I also remember my grandmother telling me of the day that a (German) pilot bailed out above some houses on the outside of Dalry, near the Blair miners' rows. A group of people ran from the town to give him a reception committee. The men captured him, and took him to the police station. Meanwhile, th...
