The Battle of South Beach Station, 1912

With George and Penny Tray competing to find us old news items about the Three Towns , scouring the newspaper archives of the world, I thought I'd better get this one in in case they pre-empt me on the subject . A little while back I mentioned some old newspapers , which were found in our attic at A...

Re: A Stroll round 1960s Saltcoats

Returning to Windmill Street; beyond the old shop of Robertson's pork butchers , their works was set back a bit, a dull grey single-storey building whose entrance must have been somewhere on the lane at the back. Then the building line came forward again for two or three more little shops before the...

Re: Dunera Cruise 1962

I remember Mr Skelly, Sam, he taught Chemistry at the Academy for many years and was head of the department in my day; Mrs Skelly was also a science teacher alongside him . Nice to hear he's still living. But although there's a bit of a resemblance I'm not sure this can be him, because according to ...

Dunera Cruise 1962

Here as promised elsewhere is a photo of my sister Anne Nock and some of the others from the Ardrossan Academy party aboard the Dunera in 1962; she's the one smiling at the camera in the middle. I seem to remember being told once that the fellow in the silly hat on the left was actually one of the A...

Re: A Stroll round 1960s Saltcoats

Seems best to divert any further discussion of the 1962 Dunera cruise to a more suitable place. So I'm putting a photo of my sister and some of the others of the Ardrossan Academy party , which may be of interest to Avril and possibly others, in the Schools Forum.

Re: Malt extract

My main memory of Virol/malt extract is from when I had to have some particularly nasty-tasting pills; I had them crushed up in a spoonful of it to disguise the taste. So I was obviously in the habit of having it. Lovely stuff ( the Virol, not the pills ! )

Re: Ardrossan in Conan Doyle

Rather a shame Conan Doyle didn't get as far as having his characters actually visit Ardrossan. If he'd never been to the town he made quite a good guess at a suitable address; Arran Place would have done nicely for Arran Villas, and then there could have been a dramatic denouement up at the castle ...

Re: A Stroll round 1960s Saltcoats

Hi Scott; no, as PT says I'm delighted to have people posting about anything that comes up while we're strolling these streets. I was even going to remark that I think Penny Tray and your brother must have been on the same Dunera cruise as my ( sadly long-dead ) big sister Anne; they may even have m...

Re: A Stroll round 1960s Saltcoats

Next shop along ( possibly a housefront in between ? ) was Robertson's the fishmongers; official name of the business , W & H Robertson. As described here http://www.threetowners.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=61953#p61953" the family running the business also owned some of the boats that were m...

Re: 'Lads of Saltcoats' (The)

There's an earlier topic on Muriel Johnstone with further biographical information on this site at http://www.threetowners.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7421#p7421 I'm sure she must be the same one who was a classmate of my sister's at Ardrossan Academy. If so she has a further small claim to Three Town...

Re: FANCY GAUN FOR A WALK? Ardrossan

I'd like to thank Penny Tray for the walk too. As someone who had rarely if ever set foot in the upper reaches of Glasgow Street, though passing along it often enough in other ways, I was particularly interested to learn about all the details of that part, and the side streets off it, that I'd never...
