Max, I'm not sure Green Street was renamed.
The village green used to be there and I suspect that gave the street its name. There was a place called Girnal Close, though.

I don't think any town maps of Saltcoats exist prior to the OS one.

I couldn't find out where the name came from, Meekan.
The earliest reference I found is from 1775, on a map by Andrew Armstrong. It was shown as N. England.
In 1789 Andrew Ainslie surveyed it and used the name New England.
