I am sure he played centre half for Hearts before he became a teacher. Most football sites refer to JOHN AINSLIE JOHNSTONE (not Johnston), born Stevenston on 17/11/1902 who signed for Hearts from Ardeer Thistle and went on to play for Scotland.
