John, if we're talking about the same person, is an exceptionally pleasant individual, and very highly respected by his former colleagues, having retired as an Inspector in Strathclyde Police. Arthur Miles was definitely a Chief Inspector. I might be wrong but I don't remember either Jimmy Lawson or Jack Wharton being sergeants.
