Re: A Stroll round 1960s Saltcoats
Sad to see that the stroll has ended. Really enjoyed it. Amazing achievement by Penny - well done and thanks for all the work you put in. It will be sustained online for future generations. A couple of thoughts - turning into Glencairn St at the foot of Raise St was Jimmy Erskine the barber, then Ma...

Re: St Mary's Jacks Road
Back to the annex at Jacks Road. I strated P1 with Miss Read in 1956. Main memory of the place was the smell of floor polish in the dining hall. Also remember the cream-coloured dentist wagon - ouch!

Saltcoats - top end of Countess St opposite the bus shelter and public toilets (both long gone),
Stevenston - near the cross, over the road from the Wonderloaf Bakery.

Re: Steve Clarke
Is he related to Jim Clarke who was signed by Celtic in 64 or 65 from St Michaels? Lou Macari, John Murray and one other signed by Celtic from St Micks at the same time.

Re: A Stroll round 1960s Saltcoats
Just catching up, so back to the "Scheme" above the High Rd where I grew up. Someone mentioned the "new" Adams Avenue shops. In the 60s these were (north to south): McGoogans (general grocery), Peggy's (bakery and sweetie shop -3d for a quarter poured into the Avery scale and the...

Re: Poll - Does Scotland really want to go it alone?
In response to "Exile", Yes, let's take the emotion right out of the equation. But could those who keep trying to scare us into retaining the status quo also give it a rest? So far, all the arguments from all the unionist parties has been negative scare stories based on fear of the unknown...

Re: Poll - Does Scotland really want to go it alone?
Sad to see the unionist loaded phraseology being used in the question (the negative-sounding "separate" rather than the positive "independent") but, to answer the question, I cannot see how any Scot can reject independence unless through fear. For example, if you are a Labour vot...

Re: A Stroll round 1960s Saltcoats
Well, yes, it was a long time ago. My memories of that wee area are mixed. First, I see the cabin as a wooden hut, maybe green and not very big, not more than 2 or 3 inside maximum. Immediately next to it a white gate leading down to a lane parallel to the track - can't remember whether straight ont...

Re: A Stroll round 1960s Saltcoats
My teacher through almost all of my primary years was Miss McKay. Am I right in thinking that her husband was in the Coop Grocery in Vernon St? I remember a rotund, cheerful man. Incidentally, you must be getting on a bit when ALL your schools have been demolished, even the ones that were new when y...
