Re: The Jubilee Bar, Saltcoats

I googled Caley Utd and it directed me here.
We were some outfit back then.
Pat and Tommy Cameron, Johnny Fisher, Danny Strachan were the ‘committee’ back when I played for the ‘Caley’
Great memories and some not so great of those times.

Re: Another Saltcoats Pool

It looks as if the wee pool was there before the one near the harbour. It's shown on the 1895 OS map. https://maps.nls.uk/view/82867041 Both are on the 1909 one (and the 1937 map). https://maps.nls.uk/view/82867044 Grew up in Harbour Street as a kid 50 year ago and never away from the ‘rocks’ from ...

I’ve always thought that Gardiners was named after wee Bobby G who was one-time manager of the Braes Bar. No?

Re: Vending Machines in the Three Towns

I remember there were a few machines on the wall of the shop at the corner of Springvale Street and Glebe Street Saltcoats in the 60's. Mostly chewing gum if I remember correctly. I've always remembered the 5 boys chocolate as a thin milk chocolate bar with 5 boys heads embossed on top, side by side...

Re: Daniel McVey Lapsley, QPM

Thanks for posting this information on an old school mate of mine. I sometimes wondered where Danny had ended up after last seeing him in Largs in 1978, his first post as a policeman. It was following a night out at The Moorings in Largs with another old mate, the Buzzer. Can't remember how it came ...

Re: Scottish independence - how would you vote?

It's a NO from me. We have our own parliament that controls the destiny of all essential areas of our society. So why are we even voting for this? Who has the gumption to say what is really behind this big push to separate from Wales, N. Ireland and England because it certainly isn't for economical ...

Re: shop in Saltcoats

Would that be Gerry Campbell who owned the fruit shop in Hamilton St ? don't understand your question ... is it from another thread? Sorry but I think this thread was initially about Campbell's fruit shop. I can't place it myself, maybe before my time although I do remember the garage up that stree...

Re: Dykesmains Primary Saltcoats

I attended Dykesmains in P7 on it's first year of opening in 1970. My class had all come up from Jack's Road PS and Mr Fairley was our P7 teacher, and not one to mess with! It was a fair trek for me living down in Harbour Street. Used to get the big A1 bus at the corner of Union Street across from t...

Yes me too LP. His own 'delicacies' and his patter lifted the spirits of all the workers at the many shutdowns I worked on. I believe he was still doing the business into his seventies!!

Auld Sinky - Last of the characters?

An old friend Willie Sinclair passed away last week. Many knew him as the 'oldest tea boy in Scotland, and as the self acclaimed 'Number One'' at Pool. A gentleman and great character, he will be sadly missed. Very few if any characters left in the three towns.
