I think yhe newspaper shop was Harry Donnelly's.
The grocer was Louis Boyd as you said.
I don't recollect a sewing shop nut ther was one further out Boglemart St. I think my mother bought hanks of wool from there

John Thompson(jock Tampson) lived next door to us at Gasworks Close
They moved to Moore Park Road East later on. We used to go down and visit them. Nice people.

Love this post, I'd totally forgotten about it.
I was born at 2 Gasworks Close. Behind Harry donnellys and across from the smiddies. I too used to play at the gas storage units. There wS a ridge which collected water and we used to pretend that there was fish in it, smelly. Happy days !

Stevenston gassworks.

I was born in Gasworks Close in 1944. The gasometers were at the end of the close and I used to play at them, a bit smelly. It was between Maxwell the dentist and Harry Donnelly's sweetie shop. There was also a blacksmith(smiddy) in the close, my granda worked there for a while. I remember mum telli...

It was definitely the Dardanelles because my mum told me she was a barmaid in it when she was 18, 1937.
