Hi Scott,
The only Alexander Mckenzie I can find that may match the description was a Private Alexander Mckenzie 1/1 Scottish Highlanders. - Machine Gun Corp Cavalry # 3227/130931.
In WW1 the cavalry did have 1 or 2 machine guns carried by a team of horses and cart.

James Mclelland born 1874 states his parents as James and Agnes on his marriage certificate as well as birth certificate. so I would have to say his parents married after his birth.
