Re: Tesco could meat counters

For what it's worth, corresponding counters in England are now open only weekends.
If it helps, shrink-packaged fish is, by all accounts, about 1 day fresher than "fresh" on the open counter.

GLASGOW HERALD 7 JUNE 1892 FIRST RUN BY THE GLEN SANNOX The Glasgow & South-Western Railway Company’s steamer GLEN SANNOX signalised her advent on the Arran route yesterday morning by a record passage. She crossed from Brodick to Ardrossan in 33½ minutes - some 4½ minutes less than the advertised t...

Re: Saltcoats as gained a bit of fame

Hi Exile, why do you say that there is no foundation to the legend? Do you have any facts to back that statement up, or are you just passing on what you have heard along the way? Hi, John Donnelly, I can see how I confused the issue - apologies - everything in Italics was lifted directly from the e...

Re: Saltcoats as gained a bit of fame

I remember reading the same legend about 30 years ago in the book "Foucault's Pendulum" by Umberto Eco - the man who wrote "The Name of the Rose", which Sean Connery filmed. Here's an extract: "(I read) 'In 1307, Philip the Fair decided to arrest all the Templars in France. There’s a legend that two...

That call to religion in the very last sentence seemed to come out of nowhere at the end of the writer's very comprehensive and very worldly analysis.

Re: Campbells, Ardrossan

I think I might have nailed this. After much online searching I ended up in the British Newspaper Archive. I found not only that the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald archive is referencing the Castlehill Vaults as far back as the late 1800's, and indeed carrying adverts for the pub, but the publicati...

Aw well, tree and decorations down and back to work tomorrow.......... needs must :( Always leave ours until Epiphany. Someone wrote on 3T last week about Miss Wade at St Michael's, and this post reminded me that she once read aloud to us the Christmas traditions as recorded by the writer Hilaire B...

Re: Miss Wade and Sister Pauline, St Michael's 1972

I went to St Michael's from 70 to 74. It's safe to say I hated almost every second of it...outside of the classrooms, and a few times also inside. I was also taught by Sr Dominic Savio - allegedly an intellectual - and likewise had zero interest in history because of the dire & pedestrian methods s...
