Re: Ardrossan Gasworks Railway Siding

I well remember that railway siding. When I was at the Academy (in the 50's) I went home for dinner (posh folks called it lunch) and using the siding and on past the foundry and piggery was a considerable short cut to Linn Road which was in the housing scheme just after the metallic. One day I saw t...

COP26: Do we deserve to survive?

Let's be clear, this is not about saving the Earth; this is about saving the human species. The Earth has existed for four and a half billion years and we have only recently occupied it for a minute fraction of that time and there is nothing we could do that would destroy it. It will continue for an...

Re: The ... What are you doing or thinking right now - Topic

I like your ideas Meg. Leaders would need to choose their constituency carefully - Sarwar would have been out on his ear! I'm not a Labour supporter but I think there is a place for a strong Scottish Labour Party within an independent Scotland. I wish he would detach the Scottish party from Westmins...

Re: The ... What are you doing or thinking right now - Topic

Do you think its fair that a candidate is able to stand both in the constituency and the list. I think if a candidate is rejected in the constituency they should not be allowed to creep in the backdoor on the list.

Re: The use of a word

I was giving an unrehearsed 'speech' at a family gathering and I was trying to keep to Ayrshire/Scots and I used a word I did not know I knew until I needed it. What I wanted to convey was "I don't understand" so what I said was "I cannae jalouse ..." I think I heard either my fa...

Re: Sundays ‘back in the day’

Up until the age of 12, Sunday meant church and Sunday school in the morning and a family walk in the afternoon. Initially we all (parents, grandparents, aunts and uncle) went to the North Church which then stood at the head of Hamilton Street. There my grandfather was an elder, my grandmother was p...

BBC Licence Fee

I have just received the letter from the BBC informing me the licence fee is £157.50. The weird thing is that blind people get a 50% discount: would that be to pay for the sound? There is no mention of the deaf. Surely they should also get a 50% discount - they can only view the images!

Re: Local Sportsmen's Gallery

Thanks for that George. Irene is looking into a possible connection to my grandfather.

(Edited) Alex and my grandfather were brothers. My thanks to hahaya2004 for her work in establishing that.

Re: Local Sportsmen's Gallery

Kilmarnock Herald and Ayrshire Gazette May 14, 1943 Alex McMaster Stevenston can lay claim to many players who have represented their country on the football field, and Alex. McMaster is one of them. As a left-back he was outstanding-not showy, but a real honest to goodness player who always gave o...

Re: Local Sportsmen's Gallery

There was an Angus Gunn in my year at the Academy (1950s) but from the date I guess the Angus Gunn referred to could have been either his father or an uncle. I don't recall my Angus ever talking about boxing but he had the build of a heavyweight.

The more testing for Covid you do, the more cases you find. Not good enough. So I instructed my people to pull back on testing.

Re: Coronavirus pandemic

I don't understand why during Trace & Support they are not going to test all the contacts of the initial positive subject. I understand that getting a negative result from a contact who is asymptomatic is of little value but finding a contact who is asymptomatic and positive would be very valuab...
