Re: Dirrans Sawmills; Neil Small; James Small; Mary Ralston

@Eddie - That's a terrific photograph - thank you for sharing. Clearly I haven't visited these pages in some time Eddie - and have come back to find your nice surprise. Thank you for helping to bring this subject to life. Like Penny - I'm impressed with the scale of the site - it covered a larger ar...

Re: Dirrans Sawmills; Neil Small; James Small; Mary Ralston

A quick reply to Francisco and to Colin in Sydney (Colinswood)... Many thanks to both of you for your posts... This is fascinating - absolutely fascinating... I am now struggling desperately to contact you both to find out more! So you are - let me see - a descendant of the Small/Stewart family? I c...

Re: Dirrans Sawmills; Neil Small; James Small; Mary Ralston

The Dirrans Sawmill photograph I mentioned in a previous post was taken in 1927 and the photograph shows a large group "the workforce of that time" 21 men and three heavy horses. I wrote to the publishers of the book to find out where they had sourced the image from - I was hoping to get a...

Re: Dirrans Sawmills; Neil Small; James Small; Mary Ralston

Here are some photographs I took of Larchfield on the 16th of November, 2006. I didn't realise it was so long ago since I visited Kilwinning! According sme records I have - Wills etc. - Larchfield was formerly known as Pathfoot cottage. I'm not sure if a smaller building (cottag) stood on this site ...

Re: Dirrans Sawmills; Neil Small; James Small; Mary Ralston

Where does the place name 'Dirrans' in Kilwinning originate from?

If Neil Small's sawmill was known as Dirran's sawmill, as this because it was based in the Dirran's area or had it once belonged to a family named Dirran's?

Re: Dirrans Sawmills; Neil Small; James Small; Mary Ralston

I've also been led to believe that this house was oce know (perhaps still is) known as Pathfoot cottage, and that this also once belonged to the Small famly at some time or other. I think the early census returns show the family to be living at Pahfoot Cottage (perhaps James Small and Margaret Mille...

Re: Dirrans Sawmills; Neil Small; James Small; Mary Ralston

Hi Bobfish, It seems like Your Aunt played a big part in your grandmother's life.Could she have lived with her after her mothers death ,as your father would have to go on working. That was not unusual. Not looked on "ancestry" for your James Small I'm not certain who looked after my Grand...

Re: Dirrans Sawmills; Neil Small; James Small; Mary Ralston

Hi Bobfish, Yes that's where the Sawmill sat, where Woodmill housing is now.The bus stop was at the entrance to the footpath ,and the Sawmill fencing ran along the pathway.I believe the entrance was just about where the start of the gardens are at the bus stop.It covered a large expanse of land. Is ...

Margaret Small born 27th April 1794 (parents are Neil Small and Jean Kerr). Margaret Small born 8th Feb 1822 (Dau...
