Re: Local Merchant Navy War Heroes
Captain Malcolm Connell was awarded an MBE for his service on board the San Eliseo after it was torpedoed. At that time he was First Officer. After the ship was abandoned on the Captain's orders, he and another officer reboarded the vessel and restarted the engines. The severly damaged ship was then...

Re: In what town is the plantation?
I used to play in the plannie as we called it in the 50s and 60s. There were a lot more trees then. We used to catch tiddlers in the burn - also tadpoles. That wasn't seen as wrong at the time. I don't think we ever bothered too much about where the boundary between the two towns was but it was almo...

Re: A Stroll round 1960s Saltcoats
I had totally forgotten that little sweet shop. My aunt used to take me there and buy me a poke of sweets which I had to eat before she returned me home. My Mum was into healthy eating and didn't really approve. It was always 2 oz of something - wine gums, midget gems etc. My aunt would buy rather l...

Re: Ardrossan Academy Primary building
I don't think there was the same choice of careers for women then and a lot of girls ended up in teaching as a result. Once in difficult to get out. I met Miss Christie a few times later on and she was always pleasant but I never grew out of my awe of her. Shame really. maryl

Re: Ardrossan Academy Primary building
Yes, Miss Christie was quite something. I had her in Primary 4 and when you got your work wrong she would make you come back in at lunchtime to do it again. I remember one time doing an addition sum again and again and again - in class, at lunchtime and probably the next day as well. I kept getting ...

Re: Ardrossan Academy Primary building
I remember photographs in the quadrangle too and the time it took to get us all sitting/standing suitably. I don't remember the Castle though - too scary for me perhaps. And those school uniforms - we seemed to wear so many layers in those days. Or was that just my mother? Vest, liberty bodice (does...

Re: Ardrossan Academy Primary building
That's a pretty good plan. I remember in my day boys and girls had to play separately - or at least were supposed to; but we tended to come together at the toilets' side of the building and played a game called Leavo if I remember right. A rather elaborate and fairly vicious team form of tag. (I don...

Re: Dunera Cruise 1962
I think that it is Mr McTaggart. I didn't go on the cruise but I remember he taught Maths in the Academy for a very few years in the early 60s and then left to go somewhere exotic. Madagascar? Maryl
